Hi
I have taken up the offer from my internet provider to upgrade to ADSL Max upto 8mb. Since converting my connection speed is awful. I have been round the houses with my ISP and have found out some answers to my problem. Basically they have told me that our exchange has old BT infrastructure and will not be upgraded for some time. I would like to get BT to upgrade our exchange but they won't do this for just me so I would like to petition them. If you are having trouble with slow broadband speeds please post a reply. If you are not sure what speeds you are getting please click here and post the results in this thread. Some people might be getting great broadband speeds if you are one of these people then I would love to know which provider you use so I can change and not bother with BT on this issue. I have added a poll to this thread as well just to gauge what speeds we are getting.

Since writing the above post I have changed my provider to ADSL24. They are not the cheapest but as a heavy user they suit me fine. I have now got full speed with both downlaod and upload most of the time. So I have waved goodbye to Tiscali and am now very happy. _________________

Hi, I'm moving to Great Munden on Friday!
I run an ecommerce development company and will need to work from home form time to time.
Can you tell me what ADSL speeds you are getting?
http://www.speedtest.net
From what I can see the exchange in Dane End is upto 8Mb/s.
The exchange doesn't have LLU so all ISP's have to use BT's network instead of installing their own. |

Hello Brooky and welcome to the Mundens.
I live about 1.5 kilometers from the exchange as the copper wire runs and I usually get about 5 mbs D/L of peak. As stated I am with ADSL24. Tiscali were shocking but I think that BT are about the same as ADSL24. You are correct that the ISP's have to use BT's kit. Great Mundens is quite a bit further away from the Dane End exchange so you will loose a certain amount of speed due to that fact. maybe some one reading this in Great Munden can post their speeds for us.

Yeah you are right speed will suffer. As long as I get 2 Meg I don't mind too much ... this website is really helpful...

I'm moving from Bishops Stortford where I lived about 100 yards from the exchange. I think this will be a shock. I think I will chose either BT or O2 for broadband. Its important to read the usage policies and many many ISPs have traffic shaping and throttle your connection. :)

It's great living around here though if you like a beer now and again you chose the wrong village. Nearest drinking establishments are: The Boot - Dane End, The Rest & Welcome - Haultwick (pronounced 'Artic), Whitehills golf cousre - Whitehills & The Sword in Hand - Westmill.
There are plenty of eating places but you have drive or taxi it.
Good luck with the move.
